Tour of the Seagate data recovery facility BTCD April 11 2018

In todays episode a real special visit.
You all know I’m always telling you guys how important data protection is right?

Well what if all your efforts didn’t work and you in fact do lose data, is that the end?

Well actually not if you are lucky enough to own a LaCie harddrive that is covered by the Seagate/LaCie data program, because in that case you don’t only get a brand new drive (even if it was your own fault), but you also have a pretty big change to get your data back…

How they do that we show you in todays episode of behind the closed DOORs.

We are very grateful to both LaCie and Seagate for allowing us to film inside their facility and talking to the engineers, it really was a very cool experience, these guys rock…..

The new 4K king of cameras?

Blackmagic always has me interested when they release something new, maybe it’s the name, because what they do sometimes really seems like black magic. The problem in the past was however that you almost needed some black gold to pay for black magic gear… but with the release of Black Magic Davinci Resolve this seemed to have changed… a video editor that could very well be one of the best for…. well free….. or $299.00 for the studio version which in all honesty probably only a small portion of the people need.

But it doesn’t seem to stop with that….
Look at this beauty.

Yes….
Black magic just released a new camera and this one is MORE than affordable, in fact I’m thinking about not buying a second 6500 from Sony but this one. Because with a price of $1295 it’s actually a steal.

Now it doesn’t make sense to just list all the specs here, just visit https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicpocketcinemacamera

But let’s take a look at some things that REALLY caught my eyes

Lenses : it’s compatible with a lot of lenses from the micro 4/3th system and there are converters for others.
Dynamic range and ISO is very nice at 13 stops and a max of 25.600
And as you can already see in the image at the start of this post a beautiful 5″ touch screen (but not a flip up for vlogging)
Of course you can shoot 12 bits RAW, although do remember this takes up a LOT of space
There are 4 mics build in but also mini XLR
it can shoot 4K 60 and even 120 frames Slow motion (HD)
it also has a fast USB-C port for external recording (cool that when you’re done you edit from the same SSD)

Of course you can also connect a monitor via HDMI
It shows HDR via the output
It uses different powersources like USB-c, battery, caserelay (Tethertools), DC

It almost sounds to good to be true, so I’m very curious to see the first results.
What’s your opinion?
Is this the killer vlog camera?
I just wish you could flip the screen around…..

The perfect lens……

Let’s talk a bit about lenses and looks.
The image we open with was shot during a workshop with a 70mm setting on a 24-70 lens. Is this the perfect/best way to shoot this scene?….. well let’s see.

“Frank what is the perfect lens for…..”
I don’t know how often I get this question, but let me put it this way…. it’s a lot

Now let’s start by saying that the perfect lens/camera is the one that you have with you… but… well that’s a bit of a cliche, so let’s give you a real tip in todays blog.

EVERY lens has it’s own character.
What I mean with this is that even between let’s say 2 50mm lenses you can see a difference. For example I sometimes love to shoot with older M42 lenses which via an adapter are connected to my Sony camera. Thanks to the peaking (focus assist) focusing is easy and fast with manual lenses. The cool thing about these lenses is that they give your images a distinct look which I personally really like. I also have some Leica lenses from the R series and those lenses are almost pure magic.. but that’s for another post (if you guys are interested in that just let me know in the comments below).

Back to todays tip.
Often it’s regarded that wide angles are “less” good for portraits or model photography than longer lenses. However I would like to point out that this is not entirely true. The main difference between a longer and wider lens is “distortion” now don’t take this too literally, but there is a totally different look to a wide angle which would indeed make it less “flattering” to shoot a portrait with from close by. On the other hand….. if you use that distortion to your advantage you can do some cool stuff like for example this.

If I shoot this with a longer lens the effect is much less prominent.

In essence you always have to remember that a camera doesn’t see depth.
The only thing it does is render objects that are close larger and objects that are further away smaller. When you shoot with a wide angle you are actually (in this case) closer to the apple and the model is much further away compared to the distance to the apple. Meaning you get this “distortion”.

Now if you make use of it, like in this example you can actually make it work for you.
Remember the image we opened with?
That’s how you would normally shoot it in the studio, but if you shoot it more wide, in my opinion the shots comes way more alive.

Now I do have to add a side note.
I really don’t like images that are shot with wideangles without being “shot” with a wide angle. In other words if you shoot a portrait like you would normally shoot a portrait with a sub 30mm lens (Full Frame) I often find the distorting taking me away from the shot. However when you use that “distortion” to work with the shot like in the sample with Anouk on the stool I really feel that the wider angle shot gives me a much more flowing image (if that makes sense). It has less compression so to say. (a term often used for longer lenses by the way).

Feel free to show your images with wide angles.

Black magic releases davinci 15

It’s no secret that black magic is quickly growing to be a serious contender for the crown of video editing.

And the bizarre thing…. Resolve is 100% free. And if you need even more… There’s also a studio version. But in all honesty the free version is probably more than enough for everyone.

I’m editing most of my vlogs and videos on premiere which on the timeline is still faster than davinci resolve 14 on my laptop. However on my desktop resolve really smokes premiere.

The main reason I love resolve is actually because it looks a lot like final cut pro which I was used to on the mac. But also because of the insanely nice way how clips work and slide under each other making editing really fast and easy.

I’ll download the new version tomorrow and start testing it. Till now I love premiere on my laptop but you’ll never know 😉 and if you need a fast editor that is free…. I honestly can’t recommend it enough.
