Tip on wide angles

Want more power from your shot?

Want more dynamics ?
Most photographers are somehow hard wired to shoot from eye level towards their subject. However this often will give you a kind of “boring” shot. Now I won’t say that it will always be boring of course 🙂 but let me put it this way, in 99% of the cases it can be more interesting.

Take for example this shot

Shot during a demo day for Sony. Not the perfect location (loads of people standing around and not the perfect location) . By using a low angle and loads of strobes I actually cut out the crowd and “hid” the location by killing the ambient light.

I also used a wide angle, which I absolutely love to use. It will distort of Course. And that’s why a lot of People are I think “afraid” to use it. But if you use this distortion to enhance lines or even motion it can work really well.

So the next time you shoot. Sit on the floor and try a different angle and of course try to shoot wide 😉
Good luck

Tip : that panoramic mode…

Most cameras now a days have it, Lightroom supports it in an awesome way, most smartphones have it, Facebook does something cool with it (Yeah that’s cool what facebook does for once)… the panorama.

Often we forget that our eyes see the world totally different than a camera, this is where the panoramic shots come into place, now don’t get me wrong, you don’t have to shoot WIDE panoramas, but sometimes 2-3 shots combined can already give a totally different look of a scene and creating a WOW shot instead of a “nah” shot.

What I love about my Sony is that I’m also able to shoot panoramas in the portrait mode (in the past only landscape was supported), this way you can get even more detail in the shot. Yeah you guessed it right I often shoot the panoramas just with the sweeping panorama mode in my camera, I know it’s JPEG and less quality than RAW but it’s SOOOO easy, well this has changed with the panorama mode in lightroom recently, so I’m now more and more shooting them in RAW and letting lightroom do it’s magic.

A good idea is to shoot a black frame before and after each panorama so you can easily find them back, especially if you shoot a lot in an area that looks pretty similar 😀

Anyway… here are some panoramas from our recent Sweden trip.

Tip : roads

Leading lines are incredibly important in photography, we all know that….
But did you know that when you shoot roads you can get some amazing results if you shoot it under different angles and if the road “leads” somewhere “interesting”…. of course you know, but let’s give some tips that I find interesting with roads.

  1. Low angle
Absolutely love this, put your camera on the road, close the aperture and shoot. Make sure you have someone with you to check for traffic, otherwise it will probably be your last shot
  2. Through the windshield of the car
I’ve had great succes with this technique, make sure to choose a faster shutter speed, and for your own safety make sure you have control over your vehicle, it’s NEVER worth an accident, don’t think about your safety but also of that of others, that being said, the results can be amazing, I often let Annewiek drive (or someone else) and shoot through the windshield, I’ve heard many times “that will never work” but most of the time it works just great
  3. Same as 2, but now also zoom a little bit
Gives GREAT sense of motion, can give awesome results
  4. Be creative
Roads can look awesome when zoomed in with a long lens, or stretched with a wide angle. With the long lens all the street signs and other objects will be compressed together, plus when it’s hot you get that awesome hear signature on the road, while with the wide angle everything looks FAR away.

Some samples from our recent trip to Sweden.
If you have cool shots from roads let me know and post them on social media below this post.

Some images from Poeka

Today some “left overs” from the workshop “round Emmeloord” we did with our model Poeka.
All the other shots were used in the tip segments on the blog before this post, so make sure to check them out to see what we did during the workshop 😀
