Don’t be afraid to go wide

Often you hear the question "what's the best lens for...."
In my opinion there is not really a best allround lens.... it all depends on creativity, what you want and what you need.
In model photography often wide angles are labeled as "not done" and I can understand this, a wide angle distorts the image (if you're not careful) and it's not a lens that will be great for model separation from the background.
2 more images from Nadine
Today just 2 images to share from a recent workshop with Nad…
Shoot into the light
Playing with light is always fun.
Most of the time people will however not include the light source, in my opinion including the light source can be very interesting, especially when you take of your sun hood (or even better use a cheap lens) which will get you some nice lens flares.
Light please…..
Light is our language, it's what we use to tell our stories.....
Now there is always a lot of debate about which lights to use, what brand, what quality, what soft box etc.
In reality however light can be used from almost everything, as long as you understand what it does and how it behaves you can actually create the looks you want with.... well even a simple lightbulb.

During the SWPP I taught several seminars for the SWPP but was also of course active on the Elinchrom booth for our friends from the flash centre.
Today some images from the booth.

Lenaa in a white dress
Last weekend I taught a workshop for an enthusiastic group of 22 from the "fotovakschool", or in English the photography school.
All students were finished with their education and wanted to see what I did during a photoshoot, this was the perfect opportunity for a little bit adapted version of the workshop "fashion shoot A-Z", our model for the day was Lenaa.
Beltcraft studios workshop the fast set 4
Today the final set from the Beltcraft studios workshops.
You've now seen 3 sets already and today the fourth.
Normally during the workshops I always try to show 3-4 completely different sets, these sets are always different, depending on the l0cation we are in, the mood I'm in (or the model/group), the light we use etc. etc. in this case we had to be out of the studio within 20 minutes after the last set (3) and because there were no further questions (we already talked a lot) I decided to see how far I could push myself (and Nadine) and took the challenge to create a complete set in 20 minutes.... and yeah the 20 minutes was including hair and makeup....... oempf.

Beltcraft studios set 2
Today set 2 from the Beltcraft studios workshops in London.
Model / styling : Nadine.
For the second setup I setup a complete scene.
Starting out with one strobe, adding one to the background and eventually even adding some constant lights that were still in the studio.
Beltcraft studios workshop set 1
When we're on location for a tradeshow I often also try to arrange one or two workshop days. In the case of London we ended up at the Beltcraft studios, a great location for fashion and the more "funky stuff", and with Nadine as your model and stylist.... well what can go wrong 😀
