Webinar with X-Rite and MacPhun tonight

On August 12th from 5:30-6:30PM (our time) I will be teaching a webinar for X-Rite and MacPhun.
Registration is free of course.

The topic is working with the new MacPhun app/plugin Tonality pro, in my opinion one of the best black and white conversion programs out there. As with most of my webinars you will not just see me using the software but you will also see the way I shoot the images before the retouch part, in other words you are with me in the studio during a live shoot with loads of information about lighting, coaching the model etc.

After the live shoot you see me select the images, and most importantly hear why I select the images I select, and after this you will see the whole retouching process, these webinars are really a shoot from A-Z in essence.

So don’t miss it and surf to …. https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/877378040  for your free registration.

Peter Hurley at StudioFD

I met up with Peter Hurley in Atlanta during Photoshop World, now for everyone who doesn’t know who Peter Hurley is…
Peter Hurley is specialized in shooting headshots, you can call them portraits but that’s not correct, a headshot is an image that you will use for a casting agency and that really has to represent that person, in short a good headshot can get on you the red carpet, a bad headshot can make you work at McDonalds. And Peter does his work very well and is considered by many as one of the best in the world. His videos on the jawline, illuminating the face etc are very popular online and help a lot of people better understanding how to shoot the “perfect” headshot.

After Photoshop World Peter and I met up in his studio in New York (where he invited me to shoot my new headshot) and during a nice diner he told me he was doing a workshop tour in Europe in July, now originally the Netherlands was not on the list, so I told him he could use our studio to host the workshop and voila the Netherlands was added to the list 🙂

So last weekend it was time for the Peter Hurley workshop.
I did hang around during the workshop of course and it’s fun to see how Peter really made a science out of the art of the headshot, it’s actually quite amazing to see what his though process is. The first day was mostly spend inside and talking about the theory, although after diner the group did get out for some nice natural light + strobe shots. The second day was completely different with loads of shoots in different setups and (thanks to some of our models) also with some extra faces.

The Arcanum

Last year I met with Trey Ratcliff at Google head offices in the states.
At that point he told me about a project he was working on that would be different from the educational programs that were on the market at that moment, because I love to work with people I was more than interested. And a few months ago the Arcanum went into beta.

I’ve been working with them from the start and it’s nice to see something grow the way the Arcanum has grown. It’s still very early of course but I think it’s a completely new way of learning and inspiring people. Due to a very busy schedule I skipped the first group of masters but I’ve become active yesterday as a master on the Arcanum, and I’m more than looking forward to be working with them.

Check them out at http://thearcanum.com
I’ve been running my own program “A year with Frank” for some time now (https://frankdoorhof.com/web/education/a-year-with-frank-doorhof/) and I think the way the Arcanum is setup it’s a very good addition to what we already offer in education. So I’m psyched to be on board.

Macphun presets

This week I released my presets for the Macphun software Intensify Pro.
The last few weeks I’ve been using Intensify pro on 99% of my images, sometimes very subtle and painting the effect in in select areas of the shots, but also sometimes on full power for my street photography.

In the past I got into the hyperreal look with a software plugin called Lucis art, but they really dropped the ball by leaving out Mac 64bits support. After this the best alternative was NIK Tonal Contrast but it somehow was just a bit too rough for me, when I got Topaz Clarity I finally found something that at least could give me some of that hyper sharpness back without halo’s around the images and I still love Topaz clarity and highly recommend it.

However when you’re on the Mac make sure to check out Macphun’s Intensify (pro) it’s awesome, it gives you a lot to play with and the results are awesome.
I dedicated a Quite Frankly episode to the plugin version which you can find here

After this episode I got a lot of questions about my presets for Intensify so I decided to create a special preset package for you guys to use. These are the presets I use on a daily basis and are fine tuned for the work I do, so they are aimed at street/travel photography and model photography. I’ve included several BW conversions with loads of contrast and details and a very subtle (but very cool) skin pop preset that will really pop your beauty portraits, and I even included a Lastolite background pop preset and a Semi Lucis version.

You can download the presets from our online store they are priced at EU 7.50 and the package contains 23 presets.
Here are some samples.
