Results workshop NY part I

August 29-30-31 I taught an ultimate weekend workshop in New York at the studio from our friend Hector, 5th Floor.
An awesome location with loads of space and an amazing overview of New York.

The weekend was divided into several segments.
The first day it was mostly me explaining techniques, showing setups and letting the attendees shoot several shots per setup, during the evening we did some cool sunset and nightshots of New York, which I will share later.

The second day it was the time for the attendees to shoot, I switched between the groups to assist and help out with ideas, this day was ended with a nice BBQ on the roof.

Workflow and retouching was explained on Day 3, including a complete headshot session for each attendee.
The ultimate weekend workshops are exactly what they say, it’s the ultimate learning experience and to be honest it’s very intense for both me and the attendees but it’s so much worth it when hearing the responses and seeing the results. And with that being said…. here are some of my results.

We started out with showing the difference between natural light and strobes, explaining metering techniques and of course some information about coaching the model.

Workshop Enka results

For me all the workshops I do are special, but some…. well are a little bit more special.
A while ago a good friend of us brought the Enka factory to our attention, a large abandoned building that was still in relatively good state (and taken care off) but had loads of potential, and when I saw the location… wow I wanted to teach there, and I believe I was not the only one that wanted to shoot/learn there because the workshop was sold out faster than any workshop we ever arranged, after some deliberation with the owners we booked a second date on the 20th of August (for the Dutch people, if you want to be there there are now 2 seats left).

Today I show some of the results from the first workshop day.
Some results I will share next week as little tip blogposts.
And yes indeed these kind of shots are what you learn to do during the workshops I teach.

Peter Hurley at StudioFD

I met up with Peter Hurley in Atlanta during Photoshop World, now for everyone who doesn’t know who Peter Hurley is…
Peter Hurley is specialized in shooting headshots, you can call them portraits but that’s not correct, a headshot is an image that you will use for a casting agency and that really has to represent that person, in short a good headshot can get on you the red carpet, a bad headshot can make you work at McDonalds. And Peter does his work very well and is considered by many as one of the best in the world. His videos on the jawline, illuminating the face etc are very popular online and help a lot of people better understanding how to shoot the “perfect” headshot.

After Photoshop World Peter and I met up in his studio in New York (where he invited me to shoot my new headshot) and during a nice diner he told me he was doing a workshop tour in Europe in July, now originally the Netherlands was not on the list, so I told him he could use our studio to host the workshop and voila the Netherlands was added to the list 🙂

So last weekend it was time for the Peter Hurley workshop.
I did hang around during the workshop of course and it’s fun to see how Peter really made a science out of the art of the headshot, it’s actually quite amazing to see what his though process is. The first day was mostly spend inside and talking about the theory, although after diner the group did get out for some nice natural light + strobe shots. The second day was completely different with loads of shoots in different setups and (thanks to some of our models) also with some extra faces.
