Kings Day 2024 a street photography style overview

Kings Day 2024

It’s all Orange!

If you have been following the blog for some years you probably already know what’s coming.
Today’s it’s “Kings Day” in the Netherlands.
This means you will see the color Orange popping up everywhere and of course our Dutch flag (Red, White, Blue).

The color orange is directly linked to the Royal family,  which is named “van Oranje-Nassau” or “House of Orange”.

Activities

For street photography, Kings Day is one of the best days to experiment. But also when you are starting out and maybe a bit nervous to take pictures of people on the street, this is the perfect day. As you can see in the pictures everyone is in a real festive mood, and there are loads of activities.

During and around Kings Day there are several activities including concerts and festivals.
We always visit the flea markets. As you can see in the photos, the streets are jam-packed with people and there is a mix of kids sitting on the floor selling their toys (ok this sounds very sad, but it’s not :D), grownups selling their toys the stuff they don’t need anymore, homemade food or other products, and of course some commercial sellers.

The photos

This year I decided to not bring my normal camera but shoot everything with the iPhone 15 Pro max and edit everything on the Lightroom CC app on the iPad Pro. In essence, it’s mostly one of my presets 😀

I hope you get a nice overview of the flea markets during Kings Day in our area in the Netherlands this way.

Did you know I recorded 2 videos on street and travel photography?
One was shot during a trip in Scandinavia
The second video is filled with great locations in New York

Fleamarket

Now a lot of people ask me how I became interested in street photography.
Well indeed it’s a bit different from the fashion work we do, but I think it also has a lot of similarities, in my street photography I always try to get the story, the feeling, the tension or movement, Jay Maisel for example calls it Gesture, I call it…. well after hearing that also Gesture 😀 (who can argue with Jay right?)

Finding that special thing, that special feeling is something that I try to do in both my fashion work and streetphotography, in my opinion that’s what sets the snapshot apart from the street photography. Now let me make clear that I only do streetphotography as a hobby and no way claim to be a pro at it, however over time I did find some things that I think can be very interesting for someone starting out with this kind of photography.

One of the most asked questions is always “Where to go?”
Well if you live in a city like New York that’s not hard, it’s a circus coming into town 24/7/365 it’s just not fair, but if you live somewhere else (like most people) some cool places are always close, let’s for example look at some images I took at a standard flea market.
