Shooting tethered and review tethertools…..

Many people who know me will know that I’m a big advocate for shooting tethered in the studio and if possible also on location.
Some people will say it’s a hassle to setup a notebook and shooting with a wire is so limiting, I have to agree with this at first, but still I strongly believe that the negatives are nothing compared to the benefits of shooting tethered.

When shooting on the card you have no real feedback on the quality of the files, you can of course check on the back of the camera but even taking into account that the modern cameras have a great quality screen, the back of the camera is still no way to make 100% sure you nailed the focus. When working with a team it becomes even worse, I’ve seen 10 people gathering around to look at the back of the camera to see how the images look, well that simply doesn’t work.

When shooting tethered we have a totally different workflow.
First of all it’s a lot faster in real live, when shooting on the card I find myself shooting more images simply to make 100% sure I’ve got the shot. When I shoot tethered I can see what I’m doing on large screen were I can zoom in on the RAW files to 100% but there is more of course…..

Push yourself to improve with….. a Phone and social media ??

Yesterday I taught a small seminar for the Photoclub at Delft and during a few of the conversations the idea for this blog post grew.

Today we almost all have a telephone with a camera, when you are using an iPhone4 you are even one of the lucky ones that have a rather good camera and a great videocamera, but how can we use this to improve our own photography and video capabilities ?

Speeeeeeed increase ? anyone ?

We all know the problem with speed, we never have enough of it.
Well at least it’s always nice to have more.
At the moment I’m using an end 2008 Macpro 8 Core and I was planning on upgrading this year to the 12 Core but to be honest when I saw the price and when I realized that I actually don’t really need it that much I decided to see what we can do with the Macpro we are using now.
The first upgrade was the videocard, in came the ATI 5770 and out went the 3870, I love to use 3 screens so I could now also loose the original ATI card. The speed increase is noticeable but not spectaculair (as expected), the main thing I’m happy with is that I can now use my preview monitor again in Final Cut pro the way it was before I by accident switched around my videocards and never got the right monitor working again after that, according to Apple it could have never worked in the first place (but it did for over a year :D)

But my search was not over and the next upgrade REALLY makes a difference…

Buy the best MF camera ?

Well you all know I’m a huge fan of Medium Format cameras and use several on a daily basis. I also own the 5DMKII but that’s for me only used in situations were the MF is simply not working well enough. There always is a lot of controversie about DSLR versus MF and most of the time it’s just people not understanding that there are horses for courses. Both systems are different and can be used next to each other of course.

However this video really cracked me up, with thanks to my good friend Brendan from Boston.
