How to photograph your guitar…. Part II

In today’s blogpost the results from set 2 from Wednesdays digital classroom broadcast where it was all about, photographing your guitar.
You can find the broadcast at our YouTube channel (youtube.com/frankdoorhof)

In this set it was time for my 1994 Steve Vai signature Ibanez Jem777
This guitar is just…. awesome, it actually took away the fun of buying guitars for the simple reason there is nothing that beats it, it plays like a dream, its super fast and….. the sound…. well it’s just plain awesomeness in a guitar body. And I just love older guitars. This one also a sonic booster inside.

First set was my 1964 Egmond guitar
Egmond was a Dutch brand that was very popular in the ’60-70’s, even Brian May owned one at one point. These guitars have soul, but play like…. well you know what I mean.

And when you have the Line 6 there… well we have to take a shot of that one too of course.
This is actually a Pure Tube amp designed by Bogner (an authority on Tube amps) and you can say about Line6 what you want but they knocked it out of the ball park with this one, the amp is absolutely awesome and incredibly versatile.

Digital Classroom, July 17 3PM-5PM CET

Frank Doorhofs Digital Classroom is sponsored by BenQ & Rogue.

This is a live, interactive, free, online broadcast from our studio in Emmeloord. And this time the topic of the live shoot is:

How to photograph your musical instrument

This episode is all about photographing musical instruments. Frank will show you the steps into product photography and more specifically, photos of guitars. For some music fans, photos of guitars can be a work of art.

Did you know there are photographers specialized in taking photos of electric guitars? Most of them work for magazines, music websites or manufacturers. That is a niche market, right? The Berlin Philharmonic orchestra even used macro photographs in 2012, taken inside the cramped space of instruments making the inner works of a violin, cello, flute an organ appear vast and spacious.

It starts with the idea, think about your camera settings, studio lighting, background, extra props and of course the retouch.

How do you get that astonishing clarity and level of detail if you look in the picture at high resolution? How many pictures do you take and what light do you use? Continuous of flash?

You will see Frank setting up and metering the lights and taking the shot. Frank will also show you some tips and tricks in Photoshop how to give your image that extra pop. See what presets and plugins Frank uses to get more special effects.

Because we have several cameras in the studio you can see the whole setup. We zoom in when Frank takes the shot and show you via “picture in picture” the results. We also improved our desktop resolution so you can now see better which settings he uses when retouching.

And the best thing is you can talk to Frank & the crew LIVE in the chat on YouTube or Facebook.

During the digital classroom, it’s also possible to send in your portrait pictures and Frank will critique them. Mail them to [email protected]

Old vintage lenses are now auto focus.

In today’s episode a review of the fotodiox adaptor that makes it possible to mount almost any vintage lens on your camera and make it an auto focus lens. It’s pretty awesome.
