Narrow it down

This is a tip that is very universal and will probably be difficult to execute but trust me it’s worth it.
I see examples of this on a daily basis in both my portfolio reviews as in online presence.
After a shoot you’re very enthusiastic about the results, and I get that, I’m the same way. But when posting the images online make sure you choose the RIGHT images, don’t post 10 images with 2 sets where 80% of the images look the same with subtle chances in poses or expression.
Choose the 1-2 images that really are AWESOME, and keep the “But these are nice too’s” on your harddrive where they will live a long and prosperous life 😀
Impact is made with 1-2 images that rock, the impact will fade with 7-8 extra that are ok.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to see loads of images but a portfolio or a blogpost I think should have the best ones only and not slight alternates that are not really adding to the story or impact. If you want to load them all onto facebook/G+ etc. that’s no problem of course but I think for your portfolio or “presentation” you can better show 10 kick @ss shots than 30 shots that are ok with 10 great ones.

2 black and whites and some tips

During studio sessions it’s always difficult to find something new in let’s say a portrait.
Now let’s be honest… we all know the mom and pop images, just a standard portrait that you see almost every where on the wall, why? well simply put it’s the shot of a child/family member you know.

But why not just go a little bit further.
I hear you say… “well because I’m not working with a model”
Well I hear you, working with a model has it’s benefits of course, but the following two shots could have also been shot with a client that is not a model, actually even the light setups are very simple.

In the first shot I use a small beauty dish with grid as my main light and added the strong black and white effect in PS with Silverfx 2.

Beltcraft studios workshop the fast set 4

Today the final set from the Beltcraft studios workshops.
You’ve now seen 3 sets already and today the fourth.
Normally during the workshops I always try to show 3-4 completely different sets, these sets are always different, depending on the l0cation we are in, the mood I’m in (or the model/group), the light we use etc. etc. in this case we had to be out of the studio within 20 minutes after the last set (3) and because there were no further questions (we already talked a lot) I decided to see how far I could push myself (and Nadine) and took the challenge to create a complete set in 20 minutes…. and yeah the 20 minutes was including hair and makeup……. oempf.

But Nadine is fast and 5 minutes before the end time I could shoot.
In this case we already set everything up before Nadine walked up the set so in theory everything should be fine…. and luckily it was (thanks to the meter of course :D).
By moving around Nadine I created 3 different looks (also one with a more zoomed out view) and these images.

Beltcraft studios set 3

For the next set we used a corner of the studio that was available with an unique prop, well I never worked with something like this before.
Nadine had the perfect outfit for this….. a cross between fashion and a gymnastic Ninja 😀
