Some classic portraits with Manon

We recently started with a completely new workshop line up, all the new workshops in Emmeloord now have a certain theme.
Recently the theme was “vintage lighting and fashion”
After explaining the approach of the techniques to the attendees I started adding some more modern twists and today you can see some of the results.

Street faces New York

Today a special post.
First of all it’s my birthday (43 already).
But second of all it’s a post about a topic I really love will on a trip, street faces.
Just random people I shoot on the street, some know and pose but most are just shot as they walk by, stand waiting etc.

For me finding the character, the unique person or just the “weird” ones is the challenge.
One could call it a self assignment 😀
I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I enjoyed shooting them.

2 black and whites and some tips

During studio sessions it’s always difficult to find something new in let’s say a portrait.
Now let’s be honest… we all know the mom and pop images, just a standard portrait that you see almost every where on the wall, why? well simply put it’s the shot of a child/family member you know.

But why not just go a little bit further.
I hear you say… “well because I’m not working with a model”
Well I hear you, working with a model has it’s benefits of course, but the following two shots could have also been shot with a client that is not a model, actually even the light setups are very simple.

In the first shot I use a small beauty dish with grid as my main light and added the strong black and white effect in PS with Silverfx 2.

Three portraits

During a session (for me) it’s very important to capture something that is “unique” although I know that everything has already been done at least once or twice (probably more) I still try to steer away from the “standard” beauty shot, and don’t get me wrong… there is nothing wrong with a beauty shot but for me… well it’s a bit “boring” to do myself.

So how do you approach something like this.
I always try to get something from my model, it can be a very subtle expression or something more.
In the following shot I went for the more relaxed expression.
Just let the model look away and let her think of someone that is coming over the hill, the fun part is that every model will give you a different expression.
