A tip on skin retouching

One of the most made mistakes during retouching is “overdoing it” on the skin.
In my opinion the final image should have nice skin, not a barby doll.

You always have to see skin as 2 separate things.
1. the pores and details
2. the color

The biggest problem is often the color.
When you look at a models face you can often see many different colors, sometimes in smaller areas next to each other, sometimes in bigger areas, overall it makes the face often look very “uneven”.

For years people have been trying to counteract this by blurring, putting in new details by adding noise (a very nice technique overall) or using plugins like Imagenomic Portraiture or Topaz Clean 3 (2 which I often use). The results are often very nice, especially the 2 mentioned above can give you great results and they are very fast (Imagenomic can be even done as an action for the same model, making retouching a series very fast). When you wanted perfection there always was/is dodging and burning, a very time consuming process that can easily take you up to 3-4-5+ hours to complete.

A few weeks ago I got into the whole “Frequency Separation” technique for skin technique and must say that I’m very impressed with it, at the moment it’s my main “to go to” technique for a “perfect retouch”.

In essence you split the details and the skin tones making it possible to literally blend the skin tones into each other creating a very nice and even skin appearance, but because the details are on top you don’t loose these. Now because the details are separated from the skin tones you can retouch all you want on that layer without worrying about “infecting” tones and luminosity.

Of course I first have to try out techniques before I share them, but at the moment I feel more than confident that this is a very powerful and great technique that can benefit every fashion/portrait/etc. photographer so I created a small video on the use of this technique for the Quite Frankly series.

You can find it here :

Remember that the retouching in the video is rather “sloppy” when using this technique you can do a pretty good retouch of the face in about 5-10 minutes, and ok it’s a lot longer than running Imagenomic Portraiture (10-15 seconds) but the results is A LOT better.

Tonality from MacPhun video

One of the things I always love it playing with new software, being it plugins or apps, it’s always nice to see if a piece of software can give you a boost in workflow or simply give you a new/better/faster way to make your images stand out.

Now there are some great BW converters out there, I love Alien Skin Exposure, SilverFx and DxO filmpack so when the guys from MacPhun asked me to testrun their newest app called Tonality (in base a BW convertor) I was very curious what they could add to the market with their app, but after some weeks of test-driving Tonality I can tell you that it ROCKS, the interface is very easy to understand but most of all the options you have to really custom make the look you want for your image is awesome. I’m 100% sure you’re gonna love it.

As with all MacPhun software it’s for Mac only, it will work as a plugin in for Lr, Photoshop but also as a standalone.

You can order it here :

Congratulations to our buddies at MacPhun for releasing another awesome app.

And here is my video on Tonality Pro.
As you can see I don’t use the layers option, this is something I do use in Photoshop, but if you want it in the software it’s there.

Webinar X-rite with Rosa

A few weeks ago I did a webinar with Rosa for our friends of X-rite.
Today some images from this webinar and a link to the webinar in case you missed it.

About our videos and a nice discount

A lot of people ask us about the instructional videos.
So I thought, let’s answer some of these questions here.

Why are they so cheap?
Well it’s simple, we want them to be available for everyone, we could very easily price them at $200.00 but I would rather reach a large group of people than just a few.

Is there a difference between your YouTube videos and what I pay for?
DUH of course, you really have to see these totally separate, if you already like our YouTube material you’re gonna love the videos, on YouTube we only show some backstage material and our podcasts but it’s all very basic and well… free. If we charge for something you can bet your money on it that it’s worth it, so in short HECK YEAH.

Are the older ones still valid?
Yes they are, I hate to repeat myself on videos so with each video we try to find new things to explain, this is also why there are different series, by the way we priced the older videos also differently so that you can see for yourself 🙂

What can I expect on the videos?
Oempf…..
A LOT
all the videos are literally jam-packed with information about model photography, like you I don’t like a video where you are watching a model pose for 15 minutes without any information, so we kept the scenes just long enough for me to do the voice over with the information…. this will mean you will hear me A LOT during the video so beware 🙂
