Light meter calibration revisited

Over time I’ve written a lot of articles on the use of the light meter, and also some about the calibration of the meter. This has fueled some discussion and also made some people doubt their methods even more than before, so I thought that it was time for a revisit of this topic.

Why calibrate the meter
In fact you are not calibrating the meter, but the combination of the meter and the camera/lens combination.
Remember that every camera can be different, and that if ISO100 is correct it could be off for ISO200.
Knowing all this makes it easier to understand why the meter out of the box is not 100% accurate.

The quick and easy way
I’ve been experimenting a lot with the calibration process and found that if you calibrate to a QPcard101 and get the numbers to read app 128.128.128 for the gray patch you are pretty accurate. However there are some things you do have to realize.

Lightroom workflow tip

As a new Lightroom user (well this is actually not true, I’ve been using a lot in the early stages when I was still half on PC and half on Mac) it could be fun for you (the readers) to see some of the things I discover a long the way and share them as tips. Some tips might be already known, some might help you a bit with speeding up your workflow.

Blast from the past with Corine

Maybe it’s a fun idea to show some images that are in fact really old (well for me) and give some background information to them?
If you like the concept let me know and I will do more.

During the start up period of my model photography I was working a lot with Corine, when you work a lot with someone it means that sometimes ideas are flowing like crazy and sometimes not…. well this was such a moment. Whatever we did there just was no idea that we would want to work out that we thought would be fun.

Why should I use LR or Aperture

As you could read last week I made the switch from Aperture to LR4.
Just to make it 100% clear, not because I don’t like Aperture (far from that) but because at the moment only 2 of my cameras are supported by Aperture and soon only 1. And to be honest that’s a bit too much of a hassle, I’m shooting with a lot of different cameras lately and it’s a real problem when you can’t browse through your images and compare them in the same software…..

Now because of the extra attention on my blog for this switch I also got a lot of questions from people that did not use any form of software to catalogue/browse or work on images, instead of answering these questions by mail I decided to make a blog post about it.
