Wireless goodies for Sony shooters

Shooting tethered is without a doubt one of the most valuable pieces of advise I can give, direct feedback, your customer can see and select images, you can do a pre-edit/selection, check focus and when working with manual focus lenses you can even do some bracketing if needed with the aid of Capture One’s awesome focus overlay (it shows everything that’s in focus as green).

Now most of the times I shoot tethered via USB-C and use my Tethertools cables and Tetherblock for this, plus some Tethertools extension locks and those together give me a pretty rock solid connection up to just under 15mtrs which in most cases is more than enough. However when shooting on location things do change a bit.

I love my Dell XPS series laptop but in all honesty outside the screen isn’t that bright and the battery… don’t get me started on that, yeah it’s ok but nothing more. A while ago we started experimenting with my Huawei M5 tablet and the build in Sony wireless app. That worked like a charm at home and in the field, the Sony sends over small JPGs and keeps the RAWs on the card and the app works great on Android (NFC) and “ok” in iOS (have to keep making a connection via password or QR), the M5 has more lightoutput than my laptop and being on location not having to carry a laptop, cables and extra battery pack + table for the laptop is a big plus, we now just use a tablet with a shade (hoodman).

However the Sony app is great at home but it fails miserably in more demanding situations.
I’m working on a series on mobile workflows with the iPad pro and smart devices instead of laptops so during our trip to SA Joburg I decided to shoot wireless for the first time in a tradeshow environment, and can tell you “DON’T EVER DO THIS YOURSELF” it was a disaster, some images came in in seconds others took 25-30 seconds, shooting from the same location not 3 mtrs away from my tablet. Literally unusable. But what than?

As you know I LOVE Tethertools but their great CaseAir doesn’t support Sony (yet) so I looked online.
CamRanger is coming soon for Sony, but I’ve been hearing that for at least 5 years now.
CamFi I already tested a year or 2 ago and although it did work it lost connection a lot and the app was…. well not that impressive. But I found out they have a new one, enter the:

CamFi pro
And trust me after the iPhone pro the name pro in my opinion has lost all it’s value (yeah I’m still an Apple fan boy but calling the 11 a pro…. nah) So what does this CamFi pro promise. Well actually quite a lot, and some things even blew my mind.

First off it promises much faster transfer speeds, well let me burst that bubble, yes it’s fast, in fact it’s VERY fast, but don’t expect to shoot RAW, not going to happen, not now not soon (maybe for still life or nature, but not far fast shooting like fashion or movement), but JPGs… well that goes REALLY snappy and I really mean REALLY. I’ve set my camera up for small JPGs and full size RAWs, in the new Sony menus you can find an option where you actually tell the camera to shoot RAW+JPG and only send the JPGs to the PC (yes this now also works for Capture One).

Ok what can it do with the app:
Autoview (handy for what I do, shoot image comes in, shoot, repeat)
Live View (can be cool to show the attendees how I make my composition, and awesome for other shooters, like remote cameras etc)
Time Lapse (always handy)
Focus stacking (cool for Macro)
HDR (Yep…. not a real fan of Highly Destructive Retouching, but… yeah ok it’s cool)
Video recording (ok that’s also handy)
Multiple camera control (yep you read that correctly, awesome for sports shooters with several cameras)
Auto print (yeah… well ok it’s there)

Transfer speeds are given as 10MB/s which I believe, again it feels really snappy.
And remember you’re shooting small JPGs so it’s almost as fast as RAWs via USB.

Capture one and Lightroom
And now it gets freaky
What if I told you that with this device you can just connect your camera to Capture One/Lightroom and those apps THINK you are shooting wired? In other words you see the camera, you can select everything and images come in like normally with USB, pretty cool right?

Yep and it works as advertised, setup is a breeze, just a small software app you run before you start shooting and you’re done.

My conclusion
You might expect a hallelujah conclusion after reading this, right?
Well it is, but…. and someone told me once that everything before but is useless, so let’s dive in.

First up.
Startup time is pretty long, but that’s pretty standard, but I would have loved for that to be a bit faster, connecting the camera works in 60-70% of the cases, don’t worry, if it doesn’t work just unplug ONLY the camera and connect it again, it never happened to me that it failed a second time, not once (and I used it a lot)

Second up.
And this is the big one.
This thing is HUGE, and I mean…. I don’t have a clue where to put it. It can’t be on the hot shoe because I need my trigger there, I don’t want a cage around my camera (I think) because I normally don’t want it on and it feels weird in my hands (I shoot with a grip) When I look at the case air you can just let it dangle next to the camera via a small cord and it’s fine. The CamFi pro…. never, it’s really big. But that also means build quality is like a tank, it’s very durable and it screams PRO device in every single way.

Third up.
Battery life is ok, they claim 6 hours, but my experience is about 4, which is more than enough (plus I got a loan unit so I don’t know how they treated the battery, I know I’m super aware of how to treat them so with me the batteries often stay in peak performance) but again 4 hours is more than enough

Fourth up.
Distance.
CamFi claims 50mtrs and I can only confirm that I did a test which was absolutely stunning.
During Photoshop World I walked all the way to the back of the room (those rooms are huge) and remember there are many wifi signals there, and the CamFi didn’t miss a beat, maybe it was a milisecond slower but all the images came in just fine and fast enough, WOW, that’s awesome.

End conclusion
If you need a wireless solution and you are like me shooting Sony, I can highly recommend the CamFi pro.
If you’re shooting Canon or Nikon and you want that integration with Capture one or Lightroom go for it.
If you want something smaller that also works just fine get the Tethertools CaseAir, but that’s only for the size, in all honesty I’m blown away by the CamFi pro…. if I could find a way to mount it without too much hassle like screwing in a case and working like that I would even recommend it even more, you could use a coldshoe splitter of course but if you’re using an ETTL or HSS/HS system that won’t work.

I have to send the unit back soon, and I have to be honest I do feel a bit sad about that.
Who knows…maybe I’ll buy it when there is no good solution before the end of the year…but you never know. 😀

HIGHLY recommended.

images are not mine

Anthony’s magic comics warehouse

When we travel there are a few things we love to do, of course try to shoot as many cool images as possible, but we also love to visit comic book stores. And when you follow the vlog you probably already knew that.

Now the cool thing about comic book shops is that they are all different. And I don’t mean different in just layout or size…. No, really different. Some are run like a super clean commercial high end store and some are literally pure chaos. And trust me…. Those are the ones you need to go to. Not only do they make very interesting places for photos but you often also get the most knowledgeable staff and without a doubt the better books and deals. In the older shops I have found a lot of treasures of the years. And the more dusty the boxes… Well the more excited I get.

Ok so every comic book store is different, but they are also all pretty similar. Ok let me rewind. Yes there is a huge difference between comic book stores but in the end they are stores that sell comics. So when you look past the decorations and organising style they are pretty similar.

However there are exceptions, but not many, and you really have to know where to go because often these kind of stores are not in “plain site”. Simply put, they are so large they often take up complete buildings and just walking around makes your head spin. In all our travels and visiting stores I only found two of those mega comic book stores. And my absolute favorite is what I want to talk about today

And don’t even remember who gave me the tip about Anthony’s but man am I still grateful. Now you have to realize that in the area we are now there are a boatload of comic book stores, and we have the rule that we try to never visit one store twice, let alone three times. And you guessed it, today was the third time.

Anthony’s was already on my list of “don’t forget” but by pure coincidence we ran into the owner when we were visiting another store, now realize these guys deal with a lot of people and we are far from “a good customer” we can’t buy too many due to the fact we have to fly with them, and most of the time I go for the cheaper books. Now when we visited the store last year for the second time it surprised me they recognized Annewiek and me, but that was in their store. Now it was just in the middle of the street and the owner came up to me and said “I know you, how are you?, Make sure to drop by I have some cool stuff for you”.

Now I’m a huge believer in customer care and I always try to give as much attention as possible to people that I meet and personally I don’t care if someone just subscribes to our YouTube channel or books a year with Frank. Everyone is important. But this is very nice.

Of course we headed over to Anthony’s and see what he got, and yes I bought some books again 😉

Now let me describe the experience and use some images but trust me you have to be there to experience it. I think next time I’ll bring a 360 camera.

When you go inside you are immediately greeted by a boatload of collectables and comics in an awesome chaotic manner. Some people will flee, but man this is now a comic book shop should be.

Now this is small and very full but you really have to go further into the store. Now do remember that this is not a normal store, I don’t even think you can just walk in, make sure you call them first.

A little bit further is the what I think they call the comic book room (what’s in a name right?)

In this room it’s pure heaven (you think). Don’t expect any $1 bins, this is a well maintained and perfectly ordered comic book collection. I wanted a special Batman comic number 1 (don’t worry a normal series, not the 50,000 and up kind) and within seconds I had it in my hand….. Mmmm I had been looking for a year for that one. That’s just unfair and cool at the same time.

Now I got a special assistant helping me out, and I think that’s a good thing because first of all for the customer that’s awesome because they know where to find stuff but also for them it’s great because they know everything stays where it should, and trust me that’s vital. As you can see here. This is the comic room.

Now most people would already be jumping up and down in this room and with good reason, I could spend the better part of a day there treasure hunting. But what comes next cannot be described.

The best I can is probably like this, do you remember the movie raiders of lost ark where are the end they open up the doors to the warehouse where the ark is stored?…… Well think about that and change the ark and other artifacts for comics, comics, comics and some more comics. But also magazines, collectables and a lot more…… I would be surprised if you actually did find the ark in there somewhere.

Now I have no clue if they ever allow other people back there but I can imagine they do not, but I guess if you ask nicely the will, but in case you cannot, here is a small and I mean very small impression, this is truely and insane place.

Sorry for the different colors but the lighting is not very good for photography and has some weird color mixes. So I decided to tint them a bit creative.

Now you might think that they only do English…..nope

Boxes and boxes with for example Dutch comics. I told you this place is really special.

Now Annewiek and I have been entrepreneurs our whole life and one thing that can make or break a business is your staff, you can be the nicest person in the world but if your staff isn’t good for your clients or isn’t interested your business will fail eventually. Well no problem here. I actually felt really uncomfortable at one point.

I told them I loved the ec comic like comics. Or in other words short horror or SF stories in one comic. Immediately they started looking and box after box where opened to find some treasure. These books were not yet in the system and he just knew he saw them somewhere, but where. Now I told them I was looking for some cheaper books (if you know nothing about comics, I have a limit of let’s say 5-10 dollars. But for those kind of comics that’s really the bottom part of the pile) but that didn’t matter. They were determined to get me cool stuff no matter what I wanted to spend….. Wow. My kind of attitude, but I did feel a bit that I took them off their work for little revenue.

Btw their staff is just as much fun as their comics. You could call them comic archeologists for the simple reason day in and day out they get new collections and they have to be archived and sorted. Man I would love that job for a few days and maybe find that 3.6 miljon action comics number 1……

After 30-40 minutes I actually got a nice stack of exactly what I wanted. “next time let me know a few days in advance and I have box for you so you can select what you like”…. Where do they do that?

I left the store after more than an hour and again realized that there is absolutely nothing that can beat Anthony’s in my opinion. Store wise we have seen some more like this. But often those mega stores are not that friendly and not really open for the public at all, not even on appointment, and when you do get permission to browse it’s often more a “just let him help himself” attitude than really going out of their way to help a really small customer.

I’m writing this blogpost after a long day of sightseeing and getting some very cool stuff at pawnshops and other comic book stores. But the highlight of the day…..yep they did it again.

Now this blog is mainly photography related as you know but sometimes you visit places that are so special you just want to share it. And this is one of those.

Whenever your in the New York area (New Jersey side) make 100% sure to contact Anthony’s and see if they will open up their store for you. They probably will and you will not regret it

Thanks again Anthony’s and staff. See you without a doubt next year.

BenQ SW270C review

As you all probably know I’m a huge fan of BenQ.
A few years ago they were in the same booth as I did demos for ExpoImaging and I was looking at their monitors when they asked me if I wanted to try one. At first I was a bit hesitant because I was also in talks at that moment with another brand which I used. However there were a few things that did draw me a lot towards BenQ.

First of all price
For what they deliver the BenQ monitors are very friendly. Take into account that with the BenQ series you often get a free monitor shade (which you often have to buy with other brands).

Second of all however quality
I’m a sucker for hardware calibration in monitors, I don’t want this to be too technical but imagine being able to calibrate a monitor not via the PC/Mac but right in the monitor itself, meaning with the software that is designed by the manufacturers to get the maximum quality of your display. Plus of course the option to use 16 bits LUTs, it’s in short all pretty well under control.

Annewiek and I ran a computer company for over 20 years and we’ve dealt with BenQ a lot in the past. For gamers… well there is one brand that they all wanted…. BenQ, so when they told me they were very serious about the new line of photography/design monitors I was immediately sold… well not immediately, I still had to see the monitor of course, but long story short… I was sold. The quality of that first monitor was without a doubt on par with what I was using at that moment but it was several hundred euros cheaper, and let’s be honest everyone can only spend their money once. But don’t get me wrong, BenQ is not a price fighter or cheap brand, on the opposite, it’s a very nicely designed monitorbrand with amazing specs, the thing is…. it’s BenQ, and the company is just a lot bigger than some of the competitors so they keep the prices lower. So don’t be fooled by price alone.

In todays review it’s about their brand new monitor, the SW270C.

Some tech talk
One of the things that it’s important for us photographers is of course, how much Adobe RGB will it show?
Well I can answer that with a whopping 99% which by any standard is pretty awesome.
Also take into account that the monitor as mentioned before is hardware calibrate-able so you really get a stunning view on your images. If this is your first Adobe RGB monitor, get ready to be stunned, the representation of color and detail is just awesome.

The monitor uses a 10bits 16bits LUT table, which means…. well it’s very good.
(It actually means that you have a load of headroom for adjustments, resulting in ultra smooth gradients between colors, so no more “banding” or other weird artifacts)

Resolution wise it’s not a 4K display but a so called 2K display, this means the resolution clocks in at 2560×1440 which is very nice for a 27″ monitor. For me personally I can handle 4K on a 27″ but 2K is perfectly fine, and I think most people will actually prefer 2K above 4K for the very simple reason that you can see everything at 100% scaling (under windows) and you don’t have to go up to 150-200% which means your images and menus actually look razor sharp on the SW270C.

Color Uniformity
For my work as an ISF calibrator I always struggle with color uniformity. Not that I can help it, but it’s just annoying as heck. Imagine a fully white screen and the edges are darker, the left is reddish and the right is more blueish. It’s not something you want to work on trust me. Now I’m the first to admit that NO monitor is perfect, it’s simply not possible (yet) but BenQ uses some pretty smart techniques to bring back the effect to an absolute minimum (read, I can measure it, but I dare you to see it). The monitor is looking silky smooth.

Out of the box calibration
Well yeah, ahum, sorry guys
This is of course a bit of a confusion issue.
Most professional monitors are delivered with a piece of paper with an overview of a calibration report, it shows you that grayscaling is right, that the colorspace and gamma are correct etc. do always remember that this means your monitor is up to the high standard BenQ wants it to be, it does NOT mean that if you connect it to your PC/Mac that you don’t have to calibrate. Every GPU (videocard) is different, and especially when you are serious about your work it’s essential that you calibrate the monitor yourself. And it’s really easy, just use the Palletmaster software that is delivered with the monitor and within a few minutes you’re up and running. Now repeat this process every time you have an important retouch job (make sure the monitor has been on for at least 30 minutes) and you’re a pro… well ok you know what I mean.

For the video guys
Video is essential now a days, if you as a photographer don’t want to do anything with video…. please reconsider, or lose your job in the future, video is key for the future.

HDR10 and native framerate
The BenQ SW270C is able to show you HDR10 material, this means in short that you have more shadow and highlight detail than on a normal SDR display. You can compare it to a HDR photo, expect in the case of video it’s not “highly destructive retouching” but “High Dynamic Range”…. yeah sorry had to make that joke, due to the many people that still can’t create a real looking HDR photo. (sorry guys).

But next to HDR10 it’s also important that a monitor supports 24 (23.976) and 25 fps playback.
Most monitors will show you this material but they will use a pull-down technique which will result in judder or even breakup of the image when motion is appearing. To be able to see this material without any further processing is vital for judging the “smoothness” of your pans, and will actually be a great learning tool for a beginning filmer.

The rest
Of course there is more.
BenQ has been delivering a “puck” with their monitors for quite some time now, and it’s interesting to see what you can do with it.
You can for example switch between color-spaces, or even compare them on screen, one side Adobe RGB and one side sRGB, this way you can literally see how your images will look online.

The SW270C now also supports USB-C which is of course a welcome addition in todays market, but not everyone seems to get this.

Conclusion
Of course it’s difficult to write a review about a monitor.
Let’s be honest, you have to plugin and it shows you your images… right?
However there is so much that is important in the design and performance of a monitor that is often forgotten.

Over the years BenQ has delivered a stunning amount of really good monitors, and at the moment I think is one of the best choices on the market if you are willing to spend some money but don’t want to break the bank, and even when you are really tight to a budget… there is a BenQ monitor for you in the P3 colorspace series (see this review) so whatever you need BenQ has you covered.

But in the end it’s about quality.
And this is were in my opinion BenQ really hits the nail on the head, and if there is a problem with a monitor their support team is really fast with answering questions. Do not confuse dealers with BenQ by the way, if you have a problem with a monitor and you’re not satisfied with your dealer, mail BenQ directly and they will help you out.

I calibrated the SW207C and have been working with for a while now and can wholeheartedly say… HIGHLY and I mean HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Mobile workflow video coming

As you know we are working on a fully tablet based PRO workflow with the iPad pro. After one week I can say it works IF you have proper internet and a fast external drive.

Video editing with #lumafusion is a dream, Lightroom CC works like a charm and for the more advanced stuff for now #afinity till Photoshop is released

Only problem is/was shooting tethered. Wireless works in the hotel and locations but at the tradeshow this was unusable slow. So we are looking at other wireless solutions and USB tethering and believe it or not I’ve got it fully working. RAW files come in and are shown and you can browse them even….. Disadvantage?
That last part (shooting with USB) only works on Android after some “tinkering”

I’ll make a video later this week or the next.
But it’s VERY promising but for it to really work you need iPadOS which is being released in September I still did it with ios12 and it makes you jump to so many hoops it’s really frustrating sometimes.

Anything you like in the video?
Let me know
