Expressions during the workshop

13-01-2012/8 Comments/in blog, Visions and technique/by Frank Doorhof

Today some images from the workshop we did last week with Susanne with a tip.
Susanne has been a model for me for a long time and it’s always fun to work with her. In this workshop I gave a lot of attention to small changes in expression to make an image “speak” to the viewer. Often this is overlooked and in my opinion good shots are missed by that. It’s not one of the easiest things to do however, so it will help when you get your model 100% at ease and shoot a series in “quick” mode letting the model run through different small changes in expressions, you will end up with mostly shots are not 100% what you want but trust me there will be a few that will tilt the WOW factor to the very positive side.

As you can see Susanne has given me some different expressions to choose from, these are my personal favorites (there were a lot more).
Also maybe fun to know is the lighting for these shots….

A lot of people ask me what to buy and what to use, and although I love to use different modifiers it’s sometimes a surprise to see what just a strobe can do, yeah you read it correctly this is just a strobe, no reflector was mounted, just the strobe without any modifier. I’m always of the opinion that people are way too much concentrating on getting modifiers without learning what light can do. Of course modifiers are great and often needed, but it’s refreshing to sometimes just play with something that’s often not used, in this case the bare strobe.
More TK from this session.

I was there also that day and I can tell you this comes almost pure out of the camera. I had a lot of fun that day and also learned you have to go back to your basics. When this is okay you can create everything you want.

Frank, i have Rx600 and Rx300. Rx600 i use as main light with Beauty Dish, and i’m looking for second modifier for another light, but cant decide which one to pick. Can u suggest anything? I’m thinking abt softbox (small or medium sized) or standard reflector with grid, so i can use it as accent light or as main light for more dramatic look.

    thank you
