22 September 2010 Day 2 Photokina
Today it was day 2 at Photokina.
Today it was a LOT busier and so also my demos attracted a lot more attention, we often had the whole booth cramped with people watching. My main theme for todays workshops was controlling contrast and light, and with a few surprises of course.
I’ve got some time to visit our friends at NIK and see some new stuff, check out their new HDR software it’s absolutely stunning, and amazing 😀 they showed some samples of a tripple exposure with people walking in the image, they were really messed up with overlapping body parts etc. their engine crunched at it for a few seconds and to my surprise (I think I used the terminology “this is sick”) there were magically two real persons in the frame without ANY artifacts, now that’s wow.
I will play a bit with it with some fashion shots and see what happens.
There was little time left to walk around but I did manage to see part of the Bill Frakes seminar which was very entertaining and showed some amazing stuff (loved the frogs Bill :D)
On a sad note I have to say that you should really take care of your gear on Photokina, someone took my 5DMKII with him/her without asking, I hope they get remorse and bring it back tomorrow (or the card), the camera is constantly in our line of sight and connected to my cart with the laptop so the one that took it had to take some effort and do it quick. It’s a shame this happens on a photography exhibition like photokina 🙁 The camera can be replaced but the images not……..
On a brighter note….
Soon we will start teaching workshops with the smaller strobes, it’s been asked to me a million times and now I’ve decided that within a few weeks I will start introducing the smaller strobes into the workshops, I’m in talks with both Canon and Lastolite so let’s see what happens.
Here is the backstage video of today.
Sorry to hear about your 5D Frank, as we already spoke about it i won’t say more. But that’s pretty idiotic by someone at the show. Let’s hope it’s a mistake somehow.
Secondly, WHY didn’t you show the ELINCHROM IPAD APP! Take video!
Thirdly if you also incorporate speedlites, dont’ forget about your studio strobe people! 🙂
my goodness. SO dissapointed to hear that someone would stoop so low to steal your camera. Stealing from anyone is horrible, but especially from a presenter/photographer who shares so much with the community (rather than a “faceless” canon booth).
Also, great to hear about the NIK software. I’ve heard all their marketing talk….but it’s nice to hear such good things about it from an independent source. Really excited for a newer/better option for HDR.
Sorry about your 5D, Frank. If all your fans would like to contribute for a new one for you, count me in.
@Brendan.
I think this video is already a bit too much 😀 since it’s in a VERY early stage, but in the end it will be awesome, but now it’s just a frame.
@Cathpah,
NIK is great, I’m huge supporter of them, I use ColorFX and Silverfx on a daily basis, and Vivenza2 just rocks 😀
@Max,
Thank you so very much that really warms my heart, that’s so kind.
Hey Frank,
nice to see you again.
I grabbed everyone with a 5D by neck and asked: ‘ Is this Franks???’
No, no result.
Thanks Steven 😀
Steven have you met Frank? If Frank grabbed everyone by there neck, he’d walk out with about 150,000 camera bodies, by my estimation. 🙂
Brendan,
I have met Frank several times 🙂 And i agree…
🙂
Ouch about the 5D. Sorry to hear about the loss.
NOTE the following story does not negate the loss.
Many years ago I read a story about a film photographer who’s camera equipment got either lost or stolen (I forget exactly as it has been very long time ago) , he stated something similar about the film being more important then the equipment. He said that if you return my film you can keep the camera as a reward, as the film is more important to me.
A few years ago in Las Vegas I needed to leave my camera with security , otherwise I was not allowed to go up to the playboy club (Palms) (They do not allow Pro cameras, or ones that even look Pro), so I took my memory cards with me and left the camera/bag with security. This was just in case as the pictures were most important for me as well. Naturally I got the camera back as security in Vegas is top notch.
