It’s From the mind of a Photo Nomad
no·mad (noun nō-ˌmad): A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.

 

When I first encountered the term “nomad” years ago it was used in a negative connotation, referring to a man who could not hold down a job and simply roamed. And yet now I firmly believe that, depending on your calling, being a nomad can be both noble and exhilarating. I have never been one for sitting still. I have always enjoyed traveling, exploring, and trying new things. Such desires have often gone hand and hand with my passion for capturing images through my lens. Growing as a photographer means constantly working on your craft, trying new techniques, experimenting, and exploring new venues and locations.

 

When this opportunity to share with a new audience on Frank Doorhof’s blog was presented to me, I immediately thought it would be fun to share some lessons I have learned in the last 9+ months of living out of the backpack in various parts of Oceania and Asia.

Quadra reflector adaptor tip

Quick tip for owners of a Quadra Reflector adapter and a Nikon SB900.

 

Some time ago, by chance or inquisitive nature, I found an additional use of the Quadra Reflector adapter (QRA) I’d like to share. I was trying to find a way to use one of my speedlights in a soft box. I own a Lastolite Ezybox, but I’ve never been really happy with it. So I was searching for an alternative. The Nikon SB900 can be inserted in the QRA and with a bit of gentle force, it can be wedged in very tight.

ALCE review

During the time we are in the states for Photoshop World and the seminars in New York and Boston I have some guestbloggers that are helping me out in keeping you the readers interested 😀 Today it’s time for Erik Schimmel and he will give a review for a Photoshop plugin called ALCE.

 

After a fair bit of experience with this little known Photoshop plug-in filter, I’d like to share my thoughts. First of all I’m in no way connected to the developer of this software. I have the paid version that anyone can obtain via: http://store.bigano.com/

 

There are many, many ways to enhance an image in software. My preferred method is primarily working in the LAB space in Photoshop. Many years ago I bought Dan Margulis book, Photoshop LAB Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace. Since then I’ve been working more and more in LAB. There are quite a few things one can achieve in LAB that are near impossible in RGB color mode. For anyone who wants to improve their editing and take a new approach to color correction and control, knowledge of the LAB colorspace is a very useful thing to master.

During our stay in the states for Photoshop World the blog is taken over by guestbloggers to entertain you as a visitor while we’re gone and have less time to update the blog. I’ve chosen the guestbloggers personally to give you different views from different people in different areas of photography and I think combined they will be a an interesting read during our time away from the Netherlands.

 

Brendan Maunder
First and foremost I would like to thank Frank for giving me the opportunity to not only be one of his selected guest bloggers but also allow me to share with you some ideas that will help you not only with your skills behind the camera but also your skills in front of the camera while having a heap of fun along the way. My name is Brendan Maunder and I am a freelance photographer located in Canberra Australia, with a particular interest in portraits and event photography and in particular the use of both speedlites and studio strobes to shape light so as to enhance the subject matter contained within photos.

 

Before we get started I just want to set the scene so we both know what to expect.

 

Here is what I will not do:
Bore the pants off you with some mumbo jumbo about photography and how you need to be in the moment or be at one with your camera.
Rabbit on about inverse laws.
Use more words that I need to, to get the message across.
