Gifts for the holidays

Every year it’s time to make the wishlist, and of course I also do this every year on the blog, so today my tips for the photographers out there (or their partners) these are the gifts I would like to get, if I didn’t already got them 😀

Movies
We all love to watch a movie now and then, but before giving “the Notebook” to your partner or yourself let’s look at some movies that I love with a photography theme.

Bang bang club
Great movie about war photographers
Gia
Movie about Gia, the first real supermodel
Pecker
Fun movie about how things can grow but also go wrong when working with people you know
The september issue
Great movie about the september issue from Vogue
Life through a lens
The documentary about Annie Leibovitz
Frames from the edge
Documentary about Helmut Newton

Now if you also want to learn something I can REALLY advise the following :
Kelbytraining subscription
Not only can you find some nice videos from yours truly on there but also from great names like Joe McNally, Jeremy Coward, Lindsay Adler, Jay Maisel, Scott Kelby, Matt Klowskowski, David Ziser, and the list goes on and on….. many websites have one or two great names but with KelbyTraining the list is just to say the least very impressive, and the best thing…. they really know how to teach. Pricing wise it’s a very good investment, you get a years subscription for less than the average workshop. And I know that even I always browse for new classes and get my inspiration from many of them. Click here for a subscription.

DVDs that really learn you something
Of course you already know that we release instructional DVDs and downloads…. right?
If not, go to www.frankdoorhof.com/shop2 and surf the download and DVD section for direct downloads.

But if you want more……
Make sure to check out these great DVDs.

Dean Collins
If I had to point out the main influence in my teaching….. it would be Dean.
And yes the material looks dated (pre-digital) but the teachings are as solid as they ever were, Dean is without any doubt the best thing you can watch when you want to dive more into understanding light and how to work within photography. HIGHLY recommended.
Get the DVDs here :
Software¤Cinema DVD: Training: The Best of Dean Collins on Lighting
Software¤Cinema DVD-Rom: Training: Dean Collins On Lighting – Live at Brooks Institute

If you’re into street photography make sure to check out this DVD set, I have it on my iPad and watch it regularly during flights, every time I watch it there is something new.
http://kelbytraining.com/product/a-day-with-jay-maisel-two-part-series/
The two part DVD series (with extra material) with Scott Kelby and Jay Maisel, it was shot as an instructional piece but it could easily be sold as a documentary, for me that makes it worth repeated viewing, and as mentioned before you will learn something new every time.

Books
Now if you don’t want to receive/give DVDs or downloads maybe a book is a good idea? I have to be honest, I’m totally psyched about my book coming out in 2013 but because that will not be before the holiday I will not include that one here, but make sure to get it as soon as it’s released. The following books I have on my shelve and learned me a lot about the topics I wanted to learn about.

Pearson¤Education Book: Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop’s Most Powerful Feature by Matt Kloskowski
Pearson¤Education Book: The Moment It Clicks: Photography Secrets From One of the World’s Top Shooters by Joe McNally
Pearson¤Education Book: The Adobe Photoshop CS6 Book for Digital Photographers
Photoshop compositing secrets : Matt Kloskowski

And of course there are many more books, but these are the ones I personally do like a lot.

Now as you can see I don’t list any hardware…. why?
The reason is very simple, if you surf to the gear guide on my website you already see what I use and what I advise people to buy, so why repeat it here 🙂 these gifts are I think the best things you can get to further your level in photography or just enjoy. So I hope you will get one of these under the tree and enjoy it as much as I did.

Oh and one more thing, if you like to support this blog and all the hard work we put into it, order it via the links on the blog.

Oh and one other addition….
I did not want to do the whole NIK, Alien skin, OnOne, Imagenomic, Red Giant etc. list this year because there simply is just way too much out there that really rocks. But because I do want to point out a few things…..

Make sure to checkout the following apps I use on my iPad and iPhone.
TapTap Camera +, Snapseed, Plastic Bullet (also on the desktop now) and of course Top Model Release.
