Don’t be afraid of the backlight and meters

Using a meter is something a lot of people act weird about however in essence it's just a measuring tool and it makes work so much easier and faster

Take a shot like this
You can take a few shots to get it the way you want it but isn't it just easier to hold the meter in front of the area you want correctly lit and meter?

Now you know the proper exposure for the diffused value so you set the Camera and voila…. but wait a minute.

Do we WANT a proper exposure.
Well most cases yes but in some cases "no" sometimes it feels more natural to have a little bit of underexposure with strong back lights it just is the way that we normally also see a scene like this with our own eyes. So we can use the Light Meter as a perfect base and then work from there to get proper exposure that'll actually fit the way that our eyes work.

At one point you will know from experience that xxx under or over exposure will give you the look you want so next time you just meter and adjust accordingly.

The best thing about the meter?
It always gets you to your starting point.
