Mini review Elinchrom square reflector

Loads of people have been asking me what reflector I used for most of the shots during the UK tour and the people visiting know it almost became a joke because we used the same reflector most of the time, soon to be nicknamed the “magic reflector”.

And that’s about how I think about it, it’s the newly released Elinchrom square reflector. They already had one on the market but it was taken off the market a while ago, I still own the old one but I’m very very happy they introduced a new one. So when you are looking for a great “magic” modifier get this one. You will love it. Elinchrom Square reflector

The reason is very simple.
It’s a great modifier for portraits, works great for the harsher beauty portraits, but outside it really shines. If you need a bit more lightoutput I would still recommend the Maxilight but if you want a really cool lightsource and still a lot of output make sure to check out the square reflector, it spreads the light really nicely, has high output from your strobes (a blessing outside) and it creates a very unique look to your images, I love the shadows and contours of the reflector. And pricing wise it’s one of the cheaper modifiers, so don’t miss it.

    Hi Frank!

    Thank you for this review.
I have seen the Square with the grid online for $100 and I am wondering if it is worth buying it.
I research the internet but not much information can be found about this modifier, more exactly not many user reviews. It suggests that it is not widely used.
Besides this review and you comments on your blog page (http://www.doorhof.nl/forum/index.php?topic=1964.0), I have found this BD-Square comparison: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1420492
I believe it is a comparison btw. the old version to a BD and I do not see to much difference with the diffusion dome, and only a minor difference with the grid. And I believe I like more the one with the BD.

What do you recommend is it worth having them both?
Do you still use this modifier? When do you use this instead of a BD or softbox?

    Thank you in advance!
    BR,
    Csongor

The BD and square are similar but also different, the square is a bit more “edgy” but it’s subtle.
If you already own the BD I would probably use that with a grid to mimic the square.
I have both and use the square when I need some really high-contrast edgy portrait work like male models.
