Some from this weekend
This weekend I taught the workshops, Studio Technique 1 and 2.
Both are the basic workshops so I always try to keep things very simple but interesting.
On Friday it was Stephanies turn to be the model for an enthusiastic group of eager students.
With the 1 and 2 workshops I mainly focus on portrait work and show the students a lot of theory about lightmeters and how light works. In the practice part of the workshop (the shoot) I try to show as many as possible options on how to work with contrast and relatively simple lightsetups that everyone can do at home even with the most simple equipment.
Here my selection of shots from this workshop.
On Saturday it was Christianne’s turn.
Christianne is one of the youngest models I work with on a regular basis (she just turned 15) but I think she has a great future as a model, the way she has grown in the past year as a model is simply put fun to see.
During the workshop Studio Technique 2 I continue were I left off in workshop 1 (although both can be followed in any order), during the shoot part however I build in small segments that shows that you really only need simple (non expensive) tools to make good images as long as you understand how “photography” works. In the case of this workshop I decided to also show how to shoot with just a simple fluorescent tube on the ceiling (the ones you see a lot in office buildings), but I also choose a different camera than I normally use…. yeah you probably guessed it, I did some shots with the iPhone4, created a funky look with the Plastic camera app and I think that proves you can make some interesting shots without shooting with a DSLR or MF camera. Also in this workshop the group worked with a ringflash, I don’t show the ringflash that often (unless the students ask) but in this case it was used to show the difference between the fluorescent light and the ringflash which as you expect give a totally different look, I also added the iPhone into that part to make the story complete.
Feel free to comment and share.
Love the variations for the second part!
Hi Frank,
I’m glad your back in full swing after the needed rest…
Do you not shoot with the ringflash more often because most of your work has more contrast? Do you personally like the look from the ringflash?
Don’t get me wrong I love the look of the ringflash but somehow I’m more attached to the shadows 😀
