So now let’s go the session we did with Corine during the Advanced III workshop from this weekend.

During the Advanced III workshop we always start out with a theory part about working on location, in the winter there is a special studio part with accessories if the weather is not good enough to go outside, but because as by a miracle the weather was amazing so we went outside with the Quadra and an Elinchrom maxispot. Working with Corine is always a blast and today she also had some nice clothing and for one session her scooter from a brand I know very well 😀 Sym…..

The first setup we did with the Sym and the Quadra and Maxilight with grid.

After the first setup we moved to a location on the other side of the studio and concentrated on finding angles and working with closeups in which natural light vs fill inflash and fighting the sun was shown.

For the final setup we used these stairs which some of you will recognize 😀
We are incredibly lucky with these kind of locations so close to our studio….

In these workshops the main focus lies on learning how to measure outside to predict what will happen with the light. A lot of photographers come home to find out that the light was not 100% set up correctly. By learning some tricks about measuring light and also understanding what light does and how it behaves, the students will gain a lot of confidence on location, and that of course takes away a lot of guess work which is often killing for a good result.

I strongly believe in both the studio as location that if you understand how to properly use a light-meter you can literally predict how a shot will turn out. The standard tricks like calculating with photographic dynamic range (or in other words measuring with a spot meter for pure white and pure black) will help you to predict if parts of the model will turn out too dark or still show detail in the dark clothing (as you can see Corine is wearing dark :D)

If you have questions or comments, feel free to post them here.

And here a small video I took with the iPhone 4 from the workshop.
Remember these are just quick backstage videos for fun.
