Sony Alpha Convention

June 2nd was one of the hottest days in recorded history in the Netherlands.
(the hottest June 2nd that is)
But for us it was time for the Sony Alpha Convention in Genk Belgium in the C-mine area. This is a beautiful area for photography but for the convention I have to be honest it was incredibly hot (maybe way too hot), and trust me I’m used to a little bit of heat, but in the Netherlands the climate is different from for example dubai or california where 40 degrees is actually doable, over here it would kill you. Anyway….

During the convention I taught 3 45 minute workshops with our model Nadine.
The idea was to show some cool lighting tricks and of course how the Alpha system changed the way I work. Well that last one is actually pretty simple.

Thanks to the EVF you can now see what you’re shooting, meaning that where in the past I would spot meter the background and calculate what I wanted it too look, now I just set my camera to manual and 1/125 ISO 100 and start changing the aperture until I see what I like and use the aperture to setup my strobes. I also demonstrated the awesome techart AF module which makes it possible to use the vintage Leica M lenses on AutoFocus on the Sony bodies, and don’t worry there are plenty of converters to also fit M42, Minolta, Nikon, LeicaR etc. That day I shot with a Helios 44-2 and a Takamur 35.

Now that playing with light could have been a problem, there was a tremendous amount of light hitting the scene and I really needed a system to totally control the area, luckily the Hensel Porty gives me app 1200W of power and fitted with the right modifier (in this case the beautydish with/without grid) I was able to do exactly what I wanted. On the other hand if you don’t have enough power to pull the things off you see in this blogpost, don’t worry, just adjust to what you have, way too many people are being held back by the idea that they can’t do something with the gear they have, my answer is very simple, create art with what you have and don’t think about what you can’t do.

Without further words…. let’s see some images.
