Natural light and more with Lenaa

After some doubts for quite some time I recently started using a Californian Sunbounce, and I have to be honest I love it a LOT.
The way it reflects the light is great of course but also the way you can steer the light is very well thought off and it’s a construction that can be easily mounted and held by an assistant, although it’s better not to use a very lightweight assistant on the edge of a cliff probably…..unless…. nah bad joke.

In the workshop with Lenaa I actually used the Sunbounce for the first time.
I shot a series with natural light, the Sunbounce and strobes, today the images from that workshop.

This is a shot with the Sunbounce.

The sunbounce under an angle to create a bit more contrast.
Lenaa Augustus 2 2013_-028-Edit And finally a shot with strobes, the Elinchrom Ranger RX with a Maxilight. You can of course create the same vignetting effect as with the sunbounce with the strobe by placing the strobe closer or using a thicker grid, but the sunbounce made it pretty easy to do it from a distance. The only problem we (well actually Lenaa) experienced was the light output, she actually mentioned that as soon as we pointed the Sunbounce towards her she felt the temperature rising about 5 degrees C.

As you can see it’s pretty easy to create high contrast images with the sun bounce, or use it under an angle for some high contrast images, of course Lenaa is in the shade for these images, but we also shot some images in the bright sun with a chair (which I will share tomorrow) and also there the Sunbounce actually threw a lot of light on the model. I will be experimenting a lot more with the Sunbounce, so keep following the blog….

Hey Frank, What item did you use from Californian Sunbounce? I have a strap for my camera but that does not have this effect on a photo 😉 Is is a reflexion screen and wich one did you use?

I love my sunbounce, easily the most powerful reflector I have and I have the 90 x 125 cm one – the mini. I’ve used it to put light in to the shaded side of a building – very bright light. My assistant held the sunbounce out in the sunlight around 6 metres away and could “steer” the light in to the shot.

I also like that the sunbounce keeps it’s shape in the wind. It makes consistent light from shot to shot. You do need a strong assistant or big stand and heavy sandbags though or you might end up trying hang gliding with it!

What they reflect is awesome indeed, much more than I expected, put the model against a wall in the shade and VOILA you don’t need strobes 😀
