Meeting with Rick Sammon and shooting….

Some people you meet and you know immediately they are “real”, Photographer Rick Sammon is one of those people.
We met up at Photoshop World in Orlando and there was an immediate “click” we both are passionate about what we do and also in our approach to teaching there are many topics we think the same about. When hanging out after Photoshop World it was soon decided that Rick and his wife Susan would visit us during their trip to Europe, and Monday it was time for the meeting. As you can imagine I was really looking forward to this meeting and everyone who has seen Rick’s work knows why 😀

And what do we do when people visit ?
Yes of course we arrange a model for a small session.
For today I asked Stephanie, one of my favorite models, to model for us and as usual she was willing to help me out. Stephanie is a model that I love to shoot because, even after all these years, I still find new expressions and poses with her and that is (for me) a quality that keeps me going back to a model again and again. And the choice was the right one because Rick loved working with her, just sitting back and seeing a fellow photographer enjoying the shoot is so much fun.

Of course (as you can see here) Rick was not the only one taking some shots. To be totally honest I really am a bad non-shooter, I just can’t resist taking shots when I see a model, you know the feeling ? (yes you know you do). So during the blog post you can see some of my shots.

Podcast
When Rick visits I also have to join him for his podcast of course, and I loved doing it.
It’s been really busy with podcasts and interviews the last few weeks with the highlights being “About Photography” and of course the hour long interview I did for “NIK radio pros” but don’t worry I always try to do something different for the podcasts, and I’m sure you’re gone love the one we did with Rick, doing it face to face instead of via skype is so much more fun and I think that will echo through the podcast, so make sure to check it out soon at : http://dpexperience.com/ and don’t only go there for my part but make sure to check out their podcasts, they are really interesting and fun.

Going to Urk
Almost a standard part of the “Frank Doorhof” experience when you visit us 😀
Urk is close to our home and can be describes as several live postcards, it’s an old fishers town that is still in it’s original state in many locations. And Urk is very photo friendly with some very nice locations like the harbor, light house and of course the overview over the “Ijsselmeer” with all the windturbines, “ketelbrug” and the memorial statue. I always go to Urk when testing new gear and love to show my guests around.
I’ve seen Rick taking some HDRs so I hope he will post one of those online in the future.

Concluding a great day
We ended a great day with a nice diner in a place our son loves (he still thanks you Rick :D)
Having people over is always something I love to do, and having Rick and Susan over was a blast.
Both are very down to earth and passionate about what they do, and don’t forget it’s always fun to to chat with a photographer like Rick, you don’t speak a lot to people that have travelled so much and share the same photography passion and are ripped off by cabbies (and not letting it happen :D, inside joke).

For us the day was a huge succes and from our side we would love to thank Rick and Susan for being our guest, see you next time.

You can find more information about Rick Sammon at : http://www.ricksammon.info or follow him on twitter at @ricksammon

ps.
I really had to add these two shots that were taken by Susan.
