Workshop images Marie 28 Aug. 2010
Yesterday it was time for the workshop Studio Technique 2.
For this workshop the team was:
MUA : Renate
Model : Marie
Renate wanted to work on her portfolio and kindly offered her services to me and I thought a workshop would be a great place to do that, and Marie…. well she needs no introduction of course for people that have been following my work longer than a few months. She has been one of my models for many years and without a doubt one of the models I love to work with over and over again.
On that issue (what makes a good model) I could write several blogposts (if you want I can, just let me know) but there is a reason I keep working with a steady team over the years. We do a lot of testshoots during the year and to be honest from the maybe 20 we do there is maybe 1 model that has potential enough to do the workshops for me and even from them only a few do some workshops. Maybe I’m just too critical 😀
During the Studio technique 2 workshop there is a lot of attention for the posing and coaching of the model and the start of story telling, there is no room yet for too much accessories but we do give attention to a bit of styling and working with angles.
So let’s see some of the images.
One of the items for the workshop is the explanation of focusplanes and with that there is of course room to experiment with a Tilt and Shift lens for results like this.
After that it’s all about finding the right angles for light, a lot of photographers are very static with their positions, in the workshops there is a lot of attention for learning to find the light but most importantly to make it work. Or in other words how to play with contrast and how to find the look you want to set. But also lots of tips about how to keep the model interesting in a high contrast shot because it’s not as easy as only changing your position.
Here one of the results.
After that it was time for a bit more experimenting with expressions and storytelling. Remember that during a workshop I can only shoot a very limited amount of frames, most of the time it’s teaching and giving the students time to shoot of course, so there is much more expression in Marie but for a workshop it’s not the time to take the time for that real killer shot, but I think these samples do show some of the difference I try to explain to the students.
Of course every workshop is different, I do this to keep it fresh for myself but also for the students who want to follow the same workshop several times. Over the years we have build a complete workshop program ranging from Studio Technique 1-2, to Advanced 1-2-3 and a Glamour and Photoshop workshop. During the year there are different location workshops and the workshops abroad of course.

I’m a great lover of the tilt shift look. I think I’ll be dragging it out to practice more portraits with though.
This was shot using the 24mm TSE with a 1.4 TC.. I think it was on the 7D to get roughly a 55mm equivalent.
The photo code’s been stripped out so it’s here: http://seanmcfoto.com/large/SeanMcCormack056.jpg
Lovely shot.
I love the look also but you don’t see it that much so a lot of people have to get used to it 😉
Some think it’s all Photoshop, but the real tilt shift is just wonderful and opens a lot of creative options.
I need to make a shoot checklist really, so I remember to shoot more of them. The 90mm TSE is on my want list!
Longer lens will give you even more “play” with the DOF.
Mostly they are used by architectural photographer of course so they are often concentrated on wide angles.
