Waterlicht… an unique look at my area

As you might or might know we live on the bottom of the sea, and no I’m not spongebob. The area we live in was “won” back from the sea.

Last week we visited an art piece by Daan Roosegaarde very close to our home (actually it’s on my bike route) in Schokland (Unesco heritage) which was an island just a few decades ago. With lasers and smoke the water like it was in the past was simulated and for just a few nights Schokland was an island again.

Images doesn’t really do it justice, but I think you can get a pretty nice idea about how it was.
Now for our region this was a huge event with over 10.000 people visiting each night so all roads were closed and we had to travel with special busses to the location, which brought me to say “Finally full busses in Emmeloord” 😀

The shot below must be my favorite shot of the event… I did fake it a little bit by opening up the top part of the shot to show the stars.

Video Freerunners with the Elinchrom HS system

Today the video we shot during the shoot with the Freerunners in Emmeloord testing out the new Elinchrom HS head.
As explained yesterday I was not going for the “standard” day to night look, I mainly wanted to see how far I could push the system to get a nice strobed look without those annoying black trails behind the jumpers which you would normally get when shooting ambient with strobes.

The ultimate workshop November 21-22nd Emmeloord

I’ve been teaching workshops for a few years now, most workshops run for a full day and although very intense there is always so much more to learn, so most students visit the workshops several times. The reason for this is very simple, I never try to duplicate workshops, there are so many things you can do with lighting, location, styling, the models etc. that it would be a shame to teach the same workshop material over and over…..

For the one day workshops I have several themes, for example “working on location”, “working with artificial and available light”, “Duo shoots”, “Masks”, “Smoke”, “Retouching” etc. etc. all these topics are so broad that they are already difficult to jam into one day…. so last year the idea actually grew to do a multiple day workshop, however when I do something I always want to make sure that what I deliver is solid, there is no sense in doing a workshop in 2 days or 3 days that can be taught in one day by just talking faster…..

So slowly the idea for the “multiple day workshop” grew and got more shape.
After the first trials the students actually came up with the name and called it “The Ultimate workshop” and I have to say I agree and use that name for these workshops.

In 2-3 days you will get so much information it will make your head spin, we are working as a small team (group size is always limited to max 10-12 people depending on the location) to create literally a multitude of different scenarios. The ultimate workshops are the best workshops I can teach, and I dare to say, probably the best on the market if you’re into model photography.

What can you expect?
Of course we work with our very best models during these workshops, so next to learning a lot you will also get a real portfolio boost. All workshops start with an Q&A session. In this session you can actually tell me what you want to learn and I will incorporate all these questions into the workshop ahead.

Tulips

Ok, you know I’m not the landscape kind of guy, and especially not really flowers.
But let’s be honest if you life in an area that is known for the beautiful tulips (and no we don’t life near the keukenhof) you really can’t resist to shoot them when they are at their best right?

Every year we have the so called “tulips route”, it’s in essence a series of signs leading tourists (and us) through the best places to shoot the tulips, these are no parks or paid entree areas, this is just the area that I call my backyard, actually a lot of this is along my normal biking route, so you can understand why once every time I forget about models and street shooting and dive into the flowers, today some samples of what we see during a trip.

Shots were done with the Sony A7r and a Leica 28mm and 135mm manual focus lens.
