What do you think…about Sony

Let me start that I LOVE petapixel. It’s one of the sites that I really like to visit and read. But this article had me a bit confused

Ok I get it canon and Nikon are in trouble. But is that sony’s fault? I don’t think so.

Yes sony is going in an insane speed but not much faster than smartphone and laptop or TV manufacturers. In fact I dare to say that it’s actually ridiculous how slow canon and Nikon are.

When I switched to Sony the 5dMKIII was the camera I used. After that I used the a99, A7R, a7RII and now a7RIII in that whole period Sony made some amazing progress with not only resolution but also high iso perfomance, auto focus and wireless eco system. In all every upgrade was worth it.

Canon and Nikon did release new cameras but the upgrades were long apart (5 year?) And to be honest hardly exciting or ground breaking.

Their mirror less cameras are ok but a far cry from what Sony and Fuji are doing.

Which brings me to Fuji?

Why not blame Fuji for the disruption of the market. In all honesty besides Sony Fuji is working like crazy to release amazing cameras. Look at the new MF cameras they are so ahead of the market in that product range it’s not even looking at competition I think. In fact the new 100mp or 50mp is high on my list to eventually maybe replace my MF setup which I still love.

When I talk to people there seems to be a sort of anti sony feeling and I don’t get it. Of course I understand that you don’t want to switch systems, especially when you realize it’s not the camera that makes the picture but it’s the photographer.

I always tell people that they don’t HAVE to upgrade but with Sony you know that when you’re ready for an upgrade there is a new and better camera in the store.

With the 5d series you know it will take “forever” before something new is released.

I remember that when I was shooting with the 5dMKI there were rumours about a mystical 100mp sensor from canon coming soon…. I would rather be pissed at canon than Sony …. Because I still haven’t seen that amazing sensor in canon cameras where Sony actually comes true with promises

The article is right about pro support. In the states it’s working but the rest of the world…..come on this is something we really need. But they are working on it and in fact in the Netherlands there is a pro program at the moment. As soon as that program runs I really feel for canon and Nikon.

Don’t get me wrong I have a HUGE canon heart. I love the brand and the Dutch people that work at canon they are really great guys. When my book was translated into dutch I was shooting Sony for years but still my contact at canon visited the release and on tradeshows they are awesome. It would really hurt me if canon would dissapear and I hope they will beat sony at one point in time (so Sony will be forced to do even better ofcourse)

In today’s market it’s normal that companies go under when they don’t innovate enough. We have seen plenty of examples of huge companies that are no more. Think Bowens, Kodak, Polaroid etc all clear in memory. It’s just a shame that the lack of innovation is blamed on in this case Sony while the problem is not Sony but the other brands that just can’t keep up.

What’s your take on this ?
