Changing the look of your set

One of the things I always try to teach during the workshops is the power you have as a photographer when you are using strobes, you can make the most beautiful setups and control the light on location, techniques like “dragging the shutter”, “day to night”, “fill in flash” etc. are all awesome…. and convert a scene to something completely different, I always call it “painting your own reality with light”.

What I really love to do is to use a mainlight on location and an extra strobe to get a sort of “fake sun” in this case a bit of flare around the model, playing with this second strobe can often lift an image from “standard” to a bit more interesting.

however sometimes it’s also very important to not forget how beautiful a shot can be without strobes, just open up the aperture and shoot.

That model is too sexy. Don’t tell her or she will want more money! The downed tree and halo lighting make the image.

Hi Frank, beautiful images! In the last shot which ratio do you use between sun light and strobe to achieve this type of result? Do you set first the key light (strobe) and than play with shutter? thx 🙂

The last shot (as mentioned) was done without any strobes.

Normally I would meter the ambiant light, determine what I want to hold detail and set the strobes to that.
