Nelson fashion shoot

Before we left for Vegas I got a very nice tweet from Jules, asking me if I would like to hang out and do a kind of shoot in a ghost town close to Vegas….. well let’s be honest you don’t have to ask twice for something like that, so I agreed. Jules already knew a great model and I immediately loved her looks, we needed a second model so I decided to ask a model through modelmayhem…….
The weird thing about modelmayhem is that although some of the models are perfect for the job there also is a lot of “noise”, models responding living 100-200 miles away, or not even looking close to what we asked in the casting call. We however did find a model that I thought was perfect for the shoot, and she also had a nice idea for the theme, however (and this actually almost never happened to me) we had to cut her out. I love models that respond to emails and don’t respond that they find it a hassle to mail me their contact information and MM page so I could bring them in contact with the organizer, take it or leave it is my motto with models. So last minute we changed the model to another great one (there are so many over here :D).

Nelson
Nelson is a really small ghost town that has already been the decor for many photoshoots and some big movie productions and videoclips. And as soon as you arrive you are looking around and wondering what NOT to shoot, it’s one big inspiration. Thanks to my good friend Mark Astmann from Manfrotto we got a ranger and quadra from Elinchrom so I could shoot what ever I wanted (no light limitations).

For the first setup we choose the gas station, you can see my favorite shots here.

After this I used the backdrop of a Kevin Costner movie in which the crash-landed a plane and the plane was still there, well this is of course the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot.

After this location I could not resist to shoot a quick image next to an old truck.

The next shot is one I wanted to do for a long time, and although it’s a very simple shot, wide open lens and natural light I really wanted a scene like this. Shooting this in the Netherlands somehow doesn’t work for me.

It was time to switch models again for a shoot with a very old school bus. I have to add that I have a weak spot for these busses and when I see one I always want to take a picture of it. Now combining it with a model was a dream come true.

After this photoshoot I’m more and more looking forward to the workshops in Boston, I know Brendan arranged some stunning locations for the workshop so I think my portfolio will be a bit thicker after this journey.

WOW, Frank, if you got ANYONE from Modelmayhem to actually show up, you pulled off a feat of un-imaginable proportion!!  My hat is off to you Sir! My old business partner had 13 flakes in a row.  SHe was on location, all set up and no “model”.  She finally gave up.
