New avatar and promo shot

Well as many photographer (I guess) I hate being in front of the camera, but because I did not like my promo shot and also wanted a new avatar I decided it was time to do it again today…. Annewiek was willing to press the shutter, and trust me that’s a daring task because I’m never happy with how I turn out in a shot. But much to my surprise we found an image I really like, so here it is the new promo shot and avatar, hope you like it.

How long have you been using the Phase One? Advantages over the Nikon how much, overall in what you do?

I’ve been using the Mamiya for some years now and switched to the phase one last year. As back I still use the leaf aptus series. nnDifference between canon (or nikon) slower AF but more accurate, better color, sharpness and fine detail. Also due to the larger sensor different behavior which I love it gives me less DOF when working with strobes outside and being able to also shoot on iso 50 is a big plus for me. Plus the MF cameras give a more 3D/real image in my opinion.

I thought I had remembered that you had the Mamiya. Why not consider the D3x instead of the PhaseOne? I have thought of going to a MF and don’t know which one. But, I like the versatility of a DSLR, especially since I have so much Nikkor glass.

Well very easy actually.nColor and detail on the MF is better (with a Leaf aptus back), but most of all due to the bigger sensor, it’s very nice to be able to shoot outside with strobes with a shallow DOF. Also with LS lenses it’s possible to sync up to 1/1600 with studio strobes outside.nnIn the studio I mainly use the RZ67ProII and when you shoot with that camera and see the 3D look of the images, trust me you know why shoot MF :DnnI love my DSLR (5DMKII) and would not want to be without a DSLR, it’s fast, it’s light and it focusses very quickly, and of course video and high ISO, but it’s horses for courses for me, in the studio I still think MF is the better choice for me.

Money, money, money… For those who don’t know, this sport, business, hobby or etc. is addictive and costly. I just got done with $10K (US) in pro lighting. I know what you mean about the MF. I would love to have a higher sync speed. I can’t justify it, can do it (I am a free lancer (20 yrs with film slr’s alone and now 5 with dslr’s), but I think I need to really hon in, or get as good as possible with my editing with the RAW files before jumping to a different medium. Its very enticing, these MF cameras, but, I am also waiting to see the next generation of Nikons, i.e. D4x (maybe 30 MP) or mirror-less. I will tell you, in all honestly, I wonder about my jumping from Canon to Nikon 3 years ago. It has left me wondering if that was necessary. Not that I don’t like the colors from Nikon, the AF is faster, but I remember the better skin tones from Canon. So I don’t want to jump again right away. There are so many factors that are good or not so good with everything. Even comparing images from LR3 to AP3 with the same NEFs give different renditions, or to match require additional steps each, and not consistently the same steps for static images or portraits. I value your opinion and appreciate your comments.

Well one should never forget that it’s not about the 1-3dE difference in color or the 16 vs 14 bits difference. In essence we are story tellers and this can be done with an iphone, a canon or nikon DSLR or a MF camera. nnI always say that will know when it’s time to upgrade. It’s that moment when you really find that your story telling could be better with a different system, and for me that was when I realized I love the 3d look and the DOF of the MF system, however I have to add that I still use my DSLR on many projects simply because it works best in those setups. nnWhen I have time, control etc I will prefer the MF system, when I have very different lights and circumstances I will choose the DSLR. nnLoads of people think that when upgrading to a better camera it will make them a better shooter, and sorry that’s not true. It’s all in the eye and mind of the shooter. Hummm I feel a blog post coming ;)nnNot aimed at you by they way but more all round. The whole I HAVE to upgrade path was never my thing. As long as the images come out good I will stick with my gear ๐Ÿ˜‰
